really actually kind of enjoy how the big lore moments are sort of quiet on a singular stream (or a small group!) instead of the events solely being the lore; i think there would be this hesitation to develop anything solo if the server reinforced this idea that Big Lore could only happen during scheduled events and days. instead the more narrative-progressing moments (take the baghera hybrid experiments revelation or the philza birdnapping for recent example) are very low-key and almost unhyped up— there’s no expectation for that kind of lore necessarily at the time which makes it more rewarding to experience as a viewer. big fan of how they do the events as player bonding time rather than serious narrative progression because it allows all the players (especially the ones who don’t engage in the rp side that much) to participate and get to know each another more; it’s very neat it’s really smart it’s nicely executed

#eleanor.txt #qsmp #tag expansion time get ready for the nuance #do i think that the events could be executed better in terms of like. coding / design. yes on occasion #i’ve seen some frustration that some players don’t take the events seriously enough and that it’s frustrating as a viewer #which i understand and empathize with i think there’s definitely A solution somewhere but i’m not sure exactly what it is tbh #i try not to criticize what i cannot personally solve i think they’re doing their best with what they’ve got #i also do believe that like the Expectation for Big Lore almost always backfires #it’s something u cannot win i think . the expectation will always in some way let you down #(especially re: character involvement seriousness of the stream amount progressed narratively contribution to general plot etc etc #there’s so many variables when you expect ‘lore’ and what that means to people)#i think there’s always some disappointed group when Big Lore starts to be hyped up & teased #whereas i see a lot less general complaints when it’s an unexpected moment (other than people upset they missed it—#arguably unavoidable whether you advertise the stream as lore focused or not)#there’s still Lore during the events things still occur information is still exchanged #but it’s not structured on lore. lore isn’t the foundation for the event it just occurs by implication #anyway. very good job qsmp impressive stuff very enjoyable

having an idea for a game but it's miles above your skill level

#personal #elevator pitch: point and click 2d art-heavy narrative driven game. mc is a scientist in a closed off laboratory in a post apocalyptic worl #player plays as the mc going through a daily routine consisting of taking care of a few patients that are dying of #the zombie plant esque disease that has wiped out humanity. working towards breakthrough day. on which they should #hopefully have managed to recreate the exact circumstances in which patient zero got turned #in hopes to reverse engineer it into a cure #solving puzzles along the way to open up new locations within the labs to piece together what exactly went wrong in the first place #and like!!!!!!!! i know i could do this. realistically i know i could put a game like this together but it's just #the dev heavy stuff that is stopping me because well i am just a game artist JHDGJFDKGJDFGKFDG #all the patients are in different stages of infection and it's all affecting them differently because of different variables #only one of the patients is actually fully lucid and can be spoken to on the daily #but then on breakthrough day they end up taking their own life JUST like patient zero did exactly a year ago #and it turns out that despite showing little symptoms on the outside the plants were taking root inside of them #which has been foreshadowed through earlier gameplay with the patient feeling itchy but not being able to scratch the itch #and on breakthrough day the flowers inside of them bloomed... and it was unbearable so they used the gun that they took #a year ago from patient zero's body (their colleague) to end it all. and THAT is what ends up turning them into a plant zombie #and the player has been working towards getting into the labs where it all started to find patient zero's body and like #get access to the logs of their last few days. and after the patient in the present has passed they listen to the logs #while the credits roll. and patient zero describes very similar symptoms in the logs. and they also couldn't have been saved #ig the patients in this could be some sort of metaphor for like. how illness doesn't always come with (the same) symptoms for everyone #and how even if it's not visible on the outside someone might be struggling a lot etc etc. something in that direction #anyway hi does anyone here see my vision. do you understand what i'm going for. anyway yes i hope i can make it reality one day

ive been saying the 'im a humanities major i cant do math' joke for a long time but i was just reminded today of how much i liked math when i was in high school. math was a bunch of fun puzzles that you got to solve and as long as you understood the process it was so satisfying and rewarding to complete

#when i was visiting colleges i sat in on a calculus class bc i was taking high school calc #and the profesdor put a problem from the homework on the board and asked someone to solve it and nobody answered #so i put my hand up. and he was like OH LOOK THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT CAN DO IT and i think everyone wanted me dead #i solved the problem correctly too. even tho i said x for the variable instead of t. idk why variables are always x in my head #i have since forgotten how to do that kind of math but i liked it a LOT when i was younger... i should take math classes again #i really really want to go back to school and just take some classes for fun. math and art history in particular i liked those when i was #getting my undergrad degree but i just took intro courses to get grad requirements out of the way. wish i'd done more #math art history AND philosophy. i wanna take more philosophy classes #witness me

just solved a problem so badly on the board in front of everyone at the seminar and got so thoroughly dragged by my thesis advisor that i feel my brain growing and getting smarter in real time just to never experience that again

#ok. so it wasn't that bad but there was something wrong with my proof that was as easy as replacing a variable with another #and i did not get what they were trying to tell me that I stood frozen in front of everyone like this 🧍 for 15 min #until it finally clicked and i solved it but that was so embarrassing. anyway there are math mistakes that I'll hopefully never repeat again #🐌

I'm going to try to relearn how to do long division by hand. I realized a few weeks ago I can't remember how to divide on paper anymore, even small numbers, and it's really been bothering me. I feel like that's something I should know how to do even with a calculator (phone) with me all the time.

i have already started to think up game mechanics for a game that i truly deeply do not yet have the skill to code....send help

#ari speaks #the Personal Project has variables/stats but they work almost like an approval system every time #or you can choose a class but then your abilities are locked to class/subclass and the differences appear thru flavortext #for example you have 3 diff types of problem-solving skills (intellect/perception/common sense)#certain choices indicate a tendency towards A B or C which gives you points in the background #and higher scores in one over the others will show you certain things as the story progresses.#but for New Idea (which leans more towards a game than an IF so far)#you wld be given points to use in 4 skills: talking/thinking/tinkering/tussling.#you also get a background that would impact those skills (i.e. being X gives you +1 to skill A)#which is fun but i think almost requires there to be some amt of RNG for parts involving skill checks? which complicates things #anyway its 2am send help #there is an AU in which i went to school for to make video games
